A recent study conducted with 10,889 women in the UK demonstrated that the use of an AI tool can significantly improve cancer detection while reducing the workload of radiologists.

Artificial intelligence detected 11 additional cancers that had not been identified by the standard double human reading. This represents a 10.4% increase in the detection rate, or one additional cancer per 1,000 women screened. At the same time, the use of this technology reduced the workload of healthcare professionals by up to 31%, without increasing the number of women recalled for further examinations.

The study explored 17 different ways to integrate artificial intelligence into the screening process. Some configurations showed notable improvements: increased detection rates, reduced unnecessary recalls, and optimized working time. For example, a method combining automated analysis and targeted human review detected more cancers while saving up to 36% of the time usually spent analyzing mammograms.

Artificial intelligence does not replace radiologists but assists them by flagging suspicious areas that might be missed by the human eye. Cases identified by the tool but not detected by doctors underwent an in-depth review by experts. In most situations, this additional verification took less than 30 seconds, proving that AI can be effectively integrated into medical routines without slowing them down.

The results of this study confirm that artificial intelligence can adapt to the specific needs of each screening center. Some sites may prioritize better cancer detection, while others may opt for a reduction in workload or a decrease in false positives. This flexibility is crucial, especially in a context where human resources are limited and the demand for screening continues to grow.

The use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer screening thus opens new perspectives for improving diagnostic accuracy and optimizing healthcare organization. The next steps will involve evaluating these methods over the long term and extending them to other regions to confirm their large-scale effectiveness.

Documentary Sources / Document Base

Reference Report

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1038/s43018-026-01126-1

Title: Prospective evaluation of artificial intelligence integration into breast cancer screening in multiple workflow settings: the GEMINI study

Journal: Nature Cancer

Publisher: Springer Science and Business Media LLC

Authors: Clarisse Florence de Vries; Gerald Lip; Roger Todd Staff; Jaroslaw Artur Dymiter; Benjamin Tse; Annie Ng; Georgia Fox; Cary Oberije; Lesley Ann Anderson

Can Artificial Intelligence Revolutionize Breast Cancer Screening?
